Detroit Rock City! Bondermania! I was clapping and cheering all night: in the supermarket reading scores on my phone, in my living room watching Pudge and Maggs pour it on and on the phone with my old man. When the BoSox go down there's only one thing to do: root against the Spanks.
One thing's for sure, I'm not going to George Steinbrenner for advice on how to stretch my dollar. The Yankees payroll? $198.7 million. The Tigers payroll? $82.3 million.
The highlight of the whole affair was watching the Tigers celebrate with the fans. Jim Leyland kissing a fan through the fence. Kenny Rogers double-fisting champagne bottles and pouring one on a cop. Dmitri Young acting a fool. Jason Grilli sporting the windsheild-wiper goggles. All while Johnny Damon, A-Rod, and Giambi looked on in disbelief. Farewell, Evil Empire. Until next year.
A-Rod: "I sucked"
"Rodriguez, baseball's $252 million man, was dropped to eighth in the batting order for the first time in a decade for Saturday's 8-3 season-ending loss.
"He was hitless in his final 12 at-bats, dropping to 4-for-41 (.098) with no RBIs in his last 12 postseason games. He made 24 errors during the regular season, tops among AL third baseman, and his third-inning error on Magglio Ordonez's routine grounder Saturday allowed the Tigers to add another run to what already was a 3-0 lead." Torre Won't Survive Yankees Collapse, To Be Fired
"Heads were likely to roll after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason by the Tigers, but the opening odds were on Alex Rodriguez going first, not Joe Torre.
"According to the New York Daily News, however, the popular Yankees manager will be fired unless he decides to resign first to save face. Sources told the newspaper that former Yankees player and manager Lou Piniella will be owner George Steinbrenner's choice to replace Torre." [ESPN.com]
Yankees Greeted By Fewer Than A Dozen Fans
"Four hours after they were eliminated by the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees pulled up to Yankee Stadium in three buses late Saturday night, greeted by fewer than a dozen fans.
"With as many police as supporters on hand, most of the players quickly went to their cars and drove away. Manager Joe Torre could be seen, along with Mariano Rivera, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano, Mike Mussina and Mike Myers." [ESPN.com]
Their Fall In Motown Is Classic
"But today we come to celebrate the colossal flop of the 2006 Pinstripes. We come to bury the New York Yankees, a favorite pastime here in New England. Red Sox fans are still licking their wounds from the five-game disgrace at Fenway Park in August, but if you love to hate the Yankees, it doesn't get any better than what went down the last three days in New York and Detroit." I couldn't agree with you more! On paper , the Spanks crush the Tigers, but desire and chemistry mean a lot in the playoffs. One little thing though. I prefer The Black Angels' "Empire" to Kasabian's.
