The Sammies

After about a week or so spinning the self-titled debut from The Sammies I am getting more and more excited to see these guys open up for Birdmonster. The 13 track CD touches just about every influence they cite on their website. I especially catch the Echo & the Bunnymen and Devo influence, but their claim that MC5, the Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pavement were also big influences is very believable. JK's assertion that they are a healthy mix of Jet, The Vacation, and stellastar* is also dead-on. Dedicated to making Charlotte a music hub naturally led them to Charlotte-based MoRisen Records, also home of The Talk, Elevator Action, and 12,000 Armies. They are opening up for Birdmonster on the following dates between DC and NYC before returning to North Carolina for four dates in late September, early October.

4 Sept - Black Cat, Washington, DC
6 Sept - Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ
7 Sept - Mercury Lounge, NYC, NY (also w. Yeltsin & Catfish)

I am really looking forward to the Black Cat action, which will be backstage. Backstage at the Black Cat is probably my favorite place to catch shows here in DC and I am hoping Birdmonster and The Sammies can fill it up with beautiful noise the way Cold War Kids, Midlake and Sound Team did a few weeks back. On another note it appears through the pictures on the website and this interview that the boys like Bud Heavies. Tall boys, in fact, that they slam on stage. I have a feeling I will like the live show...

I couldn't agree with you more on the influence's, and having seen them a couple of times, I can tell you that they don't hold back. Fronted by Frank Backgammon this show is in a word, energetic. Shredding on lead guitar is Murphy Upshaw, flanked by the smooth bass lines of Gymmy Thunderbird, while Don Yale keeps it together with his heavy foot on the kick drum. In all seeing them is a bargain for what they are charging.
