Sound Team @ Black Cat, May 19

These guys are the Dunkin' Donuts coffee in the morning. The perfect blend of Crown Royal and ginger ale. The Red Sox game after work. Essentially, they are now, officially, an addiction of mine. These guys had to go on first because Aberdeen City was driving down from Boston and hit a ton of traffic in Delaware. I know the exact tollbooth (Delaware Memorial Bridge, I-95 anyone?) that probably caused all the problems, but that is another story.

The order was supposed to be Aberdeen City, Sound Team, and then Elefant. Sound Team were good enough guys to cover down on the opening slot, Black Cat was cool with it as well, and thus, the order became Sound Team, Aberdeen City, and then Elefant. Sound Team came out and they didn't look like what I thought they would look like. This, of course, means nothing, but their presence doesn't appear to match their sound. This isn't a bad thing, I was just caught completely off guard. Collared shirts, minimal head bobbing (aside from the guy with the beard who would get a little frantic from time to time) and pretty much everyone staying in one place. And it was all good, because the music can stand alone. These guys have some phenomenal songs. I want to say it was about a 7-8 song set (I wonder if it would have been longer if they had stayed in the 2-hole) with 1 or 2 songs coming off of their WORK [EP] and several songs coming from their June 6 release, MOVIE MONSTER, notably "Movie Monster," "You're Eyes Are Liars," and "TV Torso." You guys can check those first two out for yourself...and I will tell you that they are even better live.

"TV Torso" was the true jewel in their setlist. It was the second to last song that they played and prior to this performance I was not familiar with the track. It has this swirling riff that builds, recedes, circles, and then comes back at you, a borderline chaotic ebb and flow to it that continues to draw you in until its last breath. I am now dying for this album so I can listen to this track (and all the others) over and over and over again. I was completely sold on their live capability and promise despite the brevity of the set. Hopefully the album will translate with similar strength and depth.
