SOUND Team / ILYBICD

I get the feeling that Britt Daniels really has a good eye for music talent. I think most people would agree that Spoon is a great band; a band that with each release consistenly flirts with mainstream success. It's two other Austin-based bands that are the focus of this post, Sound Team and I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, both of which have a heavy Spoon influence and both have or are about to release their first full length albums.

SOUND Team was picked up by Capitol and will release their first full length, Movie Monster, on June 6. Read an early review here at thetripwire. One will quickly notice the Spoon influence here but the Work EP (done with Spoon's producer and bassist) is exceptionally strong and I'm very much looking forward to the full album.

ILYBICD followed up their Britt Daniel-produced EP with the release of Fear is On Our Side. The band has taken their music in a slightly different direction from their poppy s/t EP, choosing a darker, serious tone. Read Pitchfork's review here. There are certainly some strong songs on the album but I don't think it quite lives up to the promise of the EP. They do earn points for listing ...TOD on their "friends" links on their site.

Actually, Mike McCarthy, who produced the last three Spoon records, recorded three of the tracks on Sound Team's Work EP (the other two were produced by bassist Bill Baird), and engineered most of "Movie Monster".
