Pearl Jam's "Love Reign O'er Me"

Pearl Jam's cover of The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" is beyond excellent. I may be getting ahead of myself but I think this is the best studio cover the band has ever released and I haven't even heard the official recording. I've listened to it about a dozen times since I am Fuel, You Are Friends posted a rip from KISW's broadcast. Pearl Jam has been my favorite band for the last 15 years but I'm continually impressed by her fanatical commitment to the band. I've since been able to find a better version from PJ fan site, The Sky I Scrape which I've posted below. Our first glimpse of the song comes from the trailer for Mike Binder's Reign Over Me starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Cheadle is an excellent actor and Sandler has his moments (Punch Drunk Love) but just hearing Eddie's vocals come in at the end are enough to bring me to the theater.

This morning, Ten Club announced what many fans had rumored, that this song will be included on this year's Holiday vinyl. Also included is the version of "Rockin in the Free World" performed by Pearl Jam and U2 in Australia, which we posted here.

UPDATE: More info from Billboard.

amen JK. I get chills everytime i hear this, as did i when i saw the preview for the movie. eddie hasn't wailed like that since "Habit". And i agree on the best recorded cover ever for PJ. The strings on this floor me.

Don't get me wrong, I love PJ. But them covering this song is NOT the reason I'm going to see this movie. I'll be seeing it because of the director, Mike Binder. That's right, this is the same Mike Binder that is responsible for "Blank Man" starring Damon Wayans. A true American classic, my friends!

NYGur, honestly, i didn't know Eddie still had it in him. i'm gushing but his voice sounds amazing. chills for sure.

jk i didn't know either. i mean we've seen glimpses in "save you" and "comatose", but he goes beyond those on this track. combine it with the music on this and i'm floored.

couldn't agree more.

agreed with JK again....he showed a glimpse of it again in Army Reserve...but this is the definitive proof.

What a sweet cover of Love Reign O'er Me. Only Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam could have pulled it off. I first heard it on the radio and wasn't sure who was singing until the scream. Then it was clearly Ed. Vedder pays proper respect in this amazing cover of an all-time great song.

Just like to say that I agree with you about Pearl Jam's cover.

I'm not a big Pearl Jam fan, but I do like them but this cover has made me respect them so much more.

I literally get chills down my spine when I hear this song.

As one who absolutely loves both Pearl Jam, The Who and Pete Townshend....I agree that only someone like Ed could do this song justice. Someone who not only loves the original song, but with the pipes that he has--this is a song you can tell Ed holds deep in his heart...as any Townshend fan can. It's an amazing cover...and the love for the original really comes through. Now if we can just get them to tour the Southeast US...dammit!!
