Emily Haines @ 9:30 Club

I promised Emily Haines & Metric a hard second look during the weekend that was Coachella 2006. Here's what I posted from the Smashberry back in Indio circa late April:

"[Metric] fucking kills. Hard riffs. Female vocal. Killing the Mojave tent. Killing. This band will get a hard second look. Awesome."
Call me drunk. Call me overly excited that Wolf Parade, Bloc Party and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were going to follow Metric in that order. And call me a liar: I never really gave them a second look. What can I say? It was a wild year and Coachella might have been the wildest weekend of them all. Next to the TV On The Radio-Streetfight-Emergency Room-RHCP disaster in mid-October. I digress.

Where was I? Emily Haines. Great voice. Lots of projects. Easy on the eyes. 9:30 Club. Next Wednesday.

From ILoveMetric.com:
"That's the funny thing about the never-ending battle between pop and art - the goalposts keep changing. And for Metric's Emily Haines (vocals/synths), Jimmy Shaw (guitar), Josh Winstead (bass) and Joules Scott-Key (drums), the most exciting thing is being able to play for both sides. Over the course of 2004-05, Metric were everywhere, from MTV and commercial rock radio to French art-house cinemas (the band made a show-stopping cameo in Oliver Assayas' 2004 junkie drama Clean); depending on the night, you could find Emily playing sombre solo piano shows in churches, or diving off the stage at Toronto's Mod Club Theatre, where Metric played an unprecedented four sold-out nights in a row in January '05. This is a band comfortable making music for both the misfits as the masses."
From Wikipedia:
"Emily Haines (born in 1974) is the lead singer of the Canadian band Metric.

"She is also a part-time member of Broken Social Scene. She has contributed backing vocals to albums by other Broken Social Scene alumni, such as solo albums by Jason Collett.

"Emily is a daughter of Canadian poet Paul Haines and sister of Canadian television journalist Avery Haines. Her brother is Tim Haines, owner of Bluestreak Records in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She was born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Canada. After settling in Peterborough, Ontario at the age of 3, she grew up in a milieu rich with experimental art and musical expression. Paul would often make cassettes of rare and eclectic music for his daughter to listen to and her early influences included Carla Bley, Robert Wyatt, and later PJ Harvey. By her teens she followed her parents' footsteps by attending the Etobicoke School of the Arts. There she met Amy Millan and Kevin Drew, with whom she would later collaborate in songs for Broken Social Scene and Stars."
From Pitchfork [7.3]:
"If Metric is all about 'sweaty fucking,' as the band once suggested, lead singer Emily Haines' first official solo outing, Knives Don't Have Your Back, is a poisoned-cigarette come down. While Metric's pedestrian neu wave often glosses over Haines' political and feminist tracts, Knives delves into her incisive gloom full-bore-- and her misery is good company. Metric's clunky riffage and hi-hat beats are replaced by simple piano figures and subtle adornments (strings, feedback, breathing organ) that draw out Haines' most stirring vocal performances to date, and the muted milieu highlights her natural, sensuous whisper, lending a sympathetic thrust to these broken-down anthems for a thirtysomething girl."

looks like Bloc Party just added their first US shows - 3/30 and 3/31 in NYC (on ticketmaster). Never even heard of the United Palace Theatre.

it is kinda hard to top tv on the radio...especially when it is seasoned lightly with a near lethal streetfight.
