The Golden State EP

It's pretty clear that Eddie Vedder and Corin Tucker have a good thing going. "Hard Sun" still gets better with every listen and the two are together again for a John Doe (and Kathleen Edwards) cover. Maybe these two will decide one day to record an album. It worked out pretty well for Plant & Krauss. The Golden State EP is out now.

I had to remind myself on several occasions to blink. I didn't want to miss anything and I didn't want the night to end. After striking out twice for the NY shows, Newark and the 10c came through for me. 7th row orchestra. I read somewhere that these shows feel like a conversation in Eddie's living room and it's true, from the Q&A to the stories behind some of the songs. There are too many things to recap but one of the more memorable moments was listening to Eddie explain the origin of "Yellow Ledbetter" and then, curiously, he actually cut himself off after he seemed to get a little choked up. He also debuted a new song that he claimed to have written at 5 a.m. that morning, after a long night of boozing. During "Hard Sun," I turned around to see Tim Robbins with a big Andy Dufresne smile on his face rocking out with the rest of us . Last night, he was the second coolest guy in the building...

Coachella Rumors: Eddie Vedder

This weekend's Coachella line-up may be a bit lacking when compared to the other big festivals this summer but the two "Sean Penn" time slots on Sunday are leading some to believe that could include Eddie Vedder (one time slot precedes My Morning Jacket). I have no idea where this started but here are some call outs.

Eddie Vedder @ The Wiltern, 4.13.08

JQ's back from Iraq, healthy and out of his fucking mind. These are all good things. He was out in LA for a few days and while we were driving home from the madness of the most attended baseball game in history at the Coliseum (Sox-Dodgers) we passed by the Wiltern and Eddie's name was in black beaming down Wilshire. I told him about the Ten Club feeding frenzy, the same thing at Ticketmaster and then let him know that as a student I'm not in a spot to start dropping StubHub prices for a gig. Even if it is a rare solo gig from the frontman of my favorite band. Fast forward past some empty bottles of wine, crushed cases of beer and obscene storytelling that went each night into the next morning and JQ was off to LAX and back into the abyss of out-processing the Army. The next day a package arrives in the mail addressed to my fiancee and underneath are the three magic words: "Get Hot Time". Inside? Two tickets to Eddie's second night at the Wiltern. These are my friends. What more can I say? I call JQ and get this response: "You didn't think I was gonna get you a fucking toaster for your wedding, did you?"

He was still in his lab coat then. His guests retired off stage. The lights dimmed and Eddie leaned down into a suitcase and began howling into one of the mics. He set a loop, then grabbed another mic and began belting an accompanying vocal track. I was frozen there, in the back row of the Wiltern completely fucking mesmerized. I haven't heard "Arc" in several years. He took his time, and it might be the memory of the whole thing fucking with me...but I think we witnessed him twisting his vocal chords for a good four or five minutes. The voice of a generation. The voice of my youth. The memories of a dozen shows from Camden, NJ to Mountain View, CA.

And I would have been good right there.

But, I had the feeling, as he walked to the front of the stage, the curtains closing behind him, and shook hands with members of the crowd ("Arc" still careening about the room on a loop) that something was going on behind him.

When they opened the curtain up Jack Irons was sitting on the drums, Eddie introduced him and noted the next one would be a "big sing-a-long". They kicked off "Last Kiss", with the crowd chanting every word and then I thought...if it ends here, I am very, very good with all of it. Guests have made the rounds on the tour, Jerry Hannan helped out in Berkeley on the first night, while Mike McCready and Sean Penn jammed out on "All Along the Watchtower" on night two at Berkeley. So, we score some Jack Irons on drums and to be honest, I'm fucking overwhelmed.

But no one moves. Eddie remains seated, Irons exits stage right. Eddie starts talking about how lucky he feels to know some of the people he knows and he's not sure if these people are "smart because they are talented, or talented because they are smart". And all of the sneaking suspicions I had leading up to the show start to unravel. He has to be talking about Ben. He hasn't played "No More" yet, and Ben helps him out with the same track on the Body of War soundtrack, courtesy of PJ's Lolla performance last year. And. And. And. "I'd like to welcome to the stage Mr. Ben Harper".

Out of my fucking mind.

I'm in the last row at the Wiltern going completely fucking apeshit as my lady is jumping up and down in the same frenetic fashion. Ben dealt some crushing blows last year at Bonnaroo: SuperJam with John Paul Jones & ?uestlove, bringing out Ziggy for "Get Up, Stand Up" and then tearing through "Dazed and Confused" with Jones again during his own set. And here he is. Sauntering out with a lab coat of his own. Taking a seat and giving Eddie an unbelievable vocal accompaniment during "No More". I can barely take it.

And if you thought they were done there. You're wrong. A backdrop is revealed with a beautiful sunset and the entire gang comes back for "Hard Sun" as Eddie fired up a recording of the studio version and added violent riffs on his guitar while bouncing around the stage in an epic little sing-a-long that included two pipes on both sides of the stage gushing dry ice.

Eddie thanks the crowd and still the set isn't going anywhere. It's just getting adjusted by more people in lab coats. Two seats. A drumset. Eddie is bouncing around in his famous half-buzzed-possibly-cocked-bebop, towards the corner, then back to the mic. "I'd like to re-introduce Mr. Ben Harper and Mr. Jack Irons. One more." Hell yes.

Ben walks out with the Weissenborn and I am all kinds of ballistic because whatever is coming he's got the fucking Weissenborn...Eddie rips into the opening bars of "All Along the Watchtower" acoustic and as I'm tearing up, Ben hovers in gently with the lead and I swear...I swear...I'm lost...they repeat "two riders were approaching..." a number of times just to get enough opportunity to let Ben crush us...and then all together "the wind began to howl..."

Oscars

As everyone knows by now, the Oscars are this Sunday night and I'm still bitter about the Eddie snub. That said, "Falling Slowly" is as great as any song that appeared on the Into the Wild soundtrack. So...I'm holding out hope for a victory there (I assume it's highly unlikely).

Body of War

From Billboard:

Tracks from Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Neil Young, Bright Eyes, Serj Tankian and Tom Morello will be found on the two-disc collection Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran.

The set is due March 18 via Sire, with a vinyl edition arriving April 15. The documentary of the same name premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival and will roll out to additional markets in the coming months.

As previously reported, Body of War chronicles the travails of Tomas Young, who was paralyzed by a bullet during his first week of military service in Iraq. Vedder was inspired to write new material for the film, which was co-directed by talk show legend Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, after meeting Young in recent months.

The first single from the album, which was curated by the injured Young, will be a version of Vedder's "No More" performed with guest Ben Harper during Pearl Jam's set at the 2007 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.

And while the full track list is still coming together, expect to find Bright Eyes' "When the President Talks To God" and Morello's "Battle Hymns" (under his Nightwatchman alter ego) on the album, plus songs from Harper, No Use For a Name, RX Bandits and Michael Franti, among others.

"The songs collected here are the sounds that have helped to inspire me and keep me going as I struggle to find the strength to deal with my new physical limitations while trying to find the energy to fight when many parts of my body and brain are telling me to stop," Young says. "Each song you hear you're hearing because I found a meaning in it that helped focus a number of emotions and turn them into something that I hope will ultimately be positive."

A portion of the proceeds from Songs That Inspired... will be donated to Iraq Veterans Against the War.

There's a very good and lengthy interview up on Billboard with Eddie Vedder. The focus, is of course, on Into the Wild but it does touch on some PJ-related material.

You can also pre-order what will surely be the incredibly awesome Pearl Jam vs. Ames Brothers: 13 Years of Tour Posters now from Ten Club. Stream the INTO THE WILD Soundtrack

I have no idea how this happened by 96.3 WROV: The Rock of Virginia (!) is streaming the album on its web site. Listen to the soundtrack here. It's short and with my first listen, it's a tad bit disappointing but hell, it's still Eddie. "Far Behind," "Long Nights," "Hard Sun" and "Guaranteed" are the standouts thus far.

Sean Penn's INTO THE WILD

Slow Going

Not much to report these days. Maybe everyone is prepping for SXSW. I really need to go one of these years. In fact, InMyTree and I made a pact. It's going to happen sooner or later.

I may try to see "300" tonight. Reviews are not surprisingly mixed. I'm still shocked by how much money it made in it's opening weekend. The all-time record for box-office releases in March? The 3rd best debut ever for an R-Rated movie. That probably gives Frank Miller a green light on just about anything for the forseeable future. It looks like he's on tap to direct "The Spirit". He's also involved in an adaptation of "Ronin" and "Sin City 2".

There's an interview with Patrick Carney, one of the best drummers in the business, over at Pitchfork.

I think the ongoing discussion of where the Arcade Fire will be playing in NYC is close to being confirmed. I read something on the UsKidsKnow forums yesterday that it's more and more likely that all 3 shows will be at The United Palace. I'll be there in a couple weeks to see Bloc Party. We'll see. The official message says: "Please do not email this site regarding the NYC shows in May. Just keep an eye on this site in the coming weeks for any updates & info regarding the venues and on-sales."

Grammy Nods

As always, you gotta take this with a grain of salt. The full list of Grammy nominations is available here. They didn't do half bad in some of the categories, and by that I mean there isn't a notable fuck-up like, say, oh, Jethro Tull getting nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. I was interested to see Wolfmother catch a nod and it seems like the Arctic Monkeys buzz definitely got to the Grammy folks.

While I like Petty's album and I love Tom Petty, I don't know how well it stacks up against some of the others that are out there. It just seems like anything U2/Bono, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and the like do, it is going to catch Grammy recognition (Petty's received 16 Grammy noms since 1981). I was surprised to see Pearl Jam absent from the Rock categories, but not shocked. Their relationship with the Grammys has been a rocky one beginning with Eddie's strange acceptance speech for "Spin the Black Circle".

Death Cab for Cutie caught a couple of nods and snuck into the Best Pop Performance. They are up against the likes of Pussycat Dolls, Keane, The Fray and The Black Eyed Peas to form one of the stranger collections of artists in a category. Weird. Mary J. Blige led the pack with 8 nominations, while the Red Hot Chili Peppers brought in 6. Metro D's awardees/categories of note follow...

Veteran's Day

Many people may not have noticed Veteran's Day today, for the simple fact that it fell on a Saturday and therefore, most of us didn't score a day off from work. But, of course, that isn't the point. In a week where we saw the democratic process kicked into high gear, there is a lot to be proud of. I was proud to see that the system works, and when people want change in America, they can work to achieve it. I am also proud that we have young men and women that still choose to sacrifice a lot of the liberties you and I might enjoy to ensure that it stays that way. To all of them - whether it was Normandy, Inchon, Khe Sanh, Sadr City, Tora Bora, or countless other places - Metro D thanks veterans everywhere for their sacrifice.
