PLUG Award Nominees; Pitchfork Lacks Any Maturity

PLUG Award nominees were announced and Band of Horses and Silversun Pickups each received 7 nominations. PLUG recognizes only independent artists and labels so if you're wondering why, for example, TV on the Radio doesn't show up. That's why. And then there's Pitchfork's Amy Phillips who very informatively spends 4 paragraphs explaining the selection and voting process, the event date, etc. adds this sentence at the very end:

"So get to voting! But please, for the love of god, stay away from Silversun Pickups."

Your opinion is one thing but singling out and denigrating ONE single band is completely uncalled for. It's just one more example (Jet review as another) that seriously questions their their credibility as a trusted source. It's a bullshit comment and it really pissed me off. And yes, I am a big fan of SSPU but I think it still would have bothered me if she had said someone like Belle & Sebastion.

THANK YOU for being a voice of reason with this. Put a fork in Pitchfork. They are done. Seriously, no other band on that ballot has worked as hard (in MY opinion) as Silversun has these last few years. Just because they sat on the album for over three months to review it, and weren't first on the game, doesn't give them the right to trash it, or anyone else for that matter. They might as well have said "vote for us." Fucking incredible.

poor baby, they hurt your feelings...hey, JET BLOWS and i would venture that anyone reading P-fork knows that and feels the same way and laughed his ass off at that review, which was 100% factual...and guess what? if you're reading the 'fork cahance are you feel the same way about SSPU...and if you don't oh well, isn't that site about, um, extremely opinionated takes on music?....

So, if i'm not the very first person to review a record, i cannot think it sucks? that's interesting to know. Because i wasn't the first to hear SSPU and i think they suck. How is that possible?

It certainly didn't hurt my feelings, I have no connection to SSPU and yes, that Jet album did suck. But I think you're missing the point. I read the SSPU review and I'm fully aware that P'fork didn't like it but I sure as hell don't need it rammed down my throat. In my eyes, the manner in which that remark was written was totally uncalled for whether it be Silversun Pickups, Grizzly Bear, or Band of Horses. Why not just take it a a step further and do a political attack ad on YouTube: DO NOT VOTE FOR SILVERSUN PICKUPS for a PLUG Award; Pitchfork has approved this message oh, and vote for us Best Music Website of the Year.

As for Nominees: Where are the Thermals for Album of the Year?

It comes down to the responsibility that Pitchfork has, but refuses to recognize. They have influence. It's not some sort of joke. But they treat it like a joke, thinking that they are being cute, and it ends up undermining their credibility.

It's filed under "News" not "Reviews." If you want to get all hipster on that ass and slip 'em the Travis Morrison treatment, then go for it. I'll laugh, crack my dictionary open and try to figure out what happens between the first and last track on the album. But, at least it will be under the guise of a "Review" aka an opinion and not "News."

It is sad that they do so much right, and in many cases have such invaluable information, yet continue to make missteps like this.
